László Németh (President)
My name’s Laci, and I’m a young and aspiring professional who loves all things related to education, with a primary focus on language teaching. I’d consider myself an autodidact with an insatiable hunger for knowing more, not only about the world of language teaching but everything beyond and beside that.
Conducting PhD studies at the University of Pannonia, Veszprém, Hungary, I’m currently a full-time university lecturer, as well as a part-time freelance English teacher, materials writer, and educational consultant.
Having been a committee member of IATEFL-Hungary since 2018 enabled me to venture into marketing and (conference) organising. My previous involvement with IATEFL-Hungary as International and Publications Coordinator has comprised of responsibilities such as editing the newsletter, designing conference brochures and other marketing materials, keeping in touch with partners, as well as organising online and offline CPD events, in part as head organiser at the Veszprém Creative Café branch.
Thank you for supporting IATEFL-Hungary, and I cannot wait to see you at our future events!
János Ujlaki (Vice-President)
I have been teaching both English and Mathematics since 2010. I have worked in various types of secondary schools (grammar school, vocational, technical and private), and I have also been teaching in bilingual education. I have also been involved in various projects, from Erasmus to material writing. Besides teaching, I am interested in training and professional development. I attend conferences and other CPD events as I find it important and necessary to keep up with the latest trends in language teaching.
I joined the committee in 2018 and since then I have been the exhibitors coordinator and I am also in charge of coordinating the Creative Cafés. I also take part in organising our events, and I have also represented the association in other conferences.
Unfortunately, 2020 hasn’t been an active year for the association, but I hope as soon as the pandemic is over, we’ll get back on track. I will try my best to maintain the association and organise CPD events for our members. I will also try to get in touch with possible sponsors to make our events worth visiting.
Barbara K. Horváth (Partnering Coordinator)
I graduated from Kodolányi János University as a teacher of English Language and Literature and a Communication Specialist. Then I went on to study for a postgraduate degree in Assessment of Reading Comprehension at the University of Szeged and completed my MA at the University of Pannonia. Now I am a PhD student in the English Language Pedagogy Program at Eötvös Loránd University.
Apart from being a teacher, I am an enthusiastic learner, too. I think a good teacher never stops learning. I always look for opportunities to refresh and update my knowledge and skills. I have taken part in a lot of training courses and I have felt honored many times representing our association at conferences in Hungary and abroad. I am proud of being an alumna of the International Visitor Leadership Program of the US Embassy, and also proud of all those projects we organized with the Regional English Language Office of the US Embassy. I also make a point of studying and carrying out research on multicultural issues, such as diversity, segregation and integration, and then implementing the best practices in the English language classroom in order to foster tolerance among my students.
This year I have worked on the application and documentation of our summer course for next year. I am very happy to announce that we have won more than 17 thousand dollars for a 4-day course focusing on critical thinking and media literacy that we can hopefully organize by Lake Balaton in July 2021 after the pandemic is over. In order to get the grant, I also had to update our SAM database at the US Embassy and our NCAGE database at the Ministry of Defence which took me quite a lot of time and energy.
My aim for the next year is to find and apply for grants in order to provide more CPD opportunities for our members.
Patrícia Szakály (PR Coordinator)
I am Patrícia Szakály and I come from Sárvár but currently live in Veszprém. I am a fourth-year student at the University of Pannonia training to become a teacher of English and German languages, which also speaks volumes about my passion for language learning. At the moment, I teach privately, mostly students around the age of 18, but I also enjoy working with children. My main insterest in teaching is integrating skills within the 21st century classroom. I feel that I have the ability to contribute to the Association with fresh and new ideas and with the perspective of a young teacher trainee. I am always happy to meet practising colleagues to get more inspired and thus, I believe that working at IATEFL-Hungary would mean a great opportunity to improve my professional skills and adapt a new mindset regarding modern-day education.
Fruzsina Mezei (International Coordinator)
My name’s Fruzsina Mezei, I am a teacher of English and Hungarian Language and Literature but in the last probably twenty years I have been only teaching English, as English has always been my number one love in my profession. I’ve been working as full-time English teacher at Kempelen Farkas Secondary School in Budapest since my graduation from university, a school ranked among the best twenty secondary schools in Hungary for years, and also in various language schools. Throughout these years I think I could get a thorough insight into not only the professional demands of a language teacher but also into the character development of the students as active learners, as our school is an eight-year grammar school where students start their education at the age of 10-11 and leave school at the age of 18 as adults. As such, it has always been a real challenge and delight for me to be part of the learning-teaching procedure of their language development.
As a teacher with many years of (teaching) experience I exactly know how important professional development and commitment are, so I try to grab the opportunity and join various conferences in Hungary and abroad whenever I can. I’m an enthusiastic Creative Café-goer and actively take part in different teacher training courses not only in Hungary but in native surroundings too, recently many times in Devon at SOL… and then you come to realise that no matter which part of the world you come from, Teaching English as a Foreign Language IS the real common basis of all, facing the very same challenges without borders.
I think IATEFL-Hungary is an association which connects people, gives teachers of English in all sectors not only professional support, but also provides many opportunities to refresh and broaden the scale of methodological tools and knowledge online and offline that we can later incorporate into our teaching strategies, and there is a great demand for it, so I will gladly try to do my best in the future to help the association.
Attila Wind (Publications Coordinator)
My name is Attila Wind.
I have worked as an English teacher at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
I am a full-time assistant lecturer at the Department of English Applied Linguistics, Eötvös Loránd University. I obtained a MA degree in TESOL at the University of Sunderland and PhD degree in applied linguistics at Lancaster University in 2019.
In my research, I am interested in second language (L2) acquisition with a special focus on L2 writing development, self-regulation and self-assessment.
In my free time, I play music with my friends and spend time with my family.
As far as my future involvement with IATEFL-Hungary is concerned, I would happily volunteer as a website administrator or marketing coordinator. I hope my experience and skills will contribute to future success of IATEFL-Hungary.
Mary Sousa (Creative Café Coordinator)
I teach English as a foreign language to adults. It’s an incredibly rewarding job that I only wish I had discovered sooner! My passion is teaching, especially finding exciting new ways to help my learners succeed. I’m interested in ideas about everything from fossilized errors to managing mixed level classes. I feel challenged to integrate traditional and Internet-based (social network-based) methods. For the past twelve years, I have run a weekly discussion group with native speakers of English and Hungarian which is unique because we switch languages half-way.
Before my ELT career I worked as a translating secretary for several companies, and the organizational skills I acquired will certainly benefit IATEFL Hungary’s needs for a Creative Cafe coordinator.
